Dar es Salaam, 10th May, 2012:

At an event held in the Tanzanian capital of Dar es Salaam today, Nokia announced the launch of a developer training programme in partnership with the Dar Teknohama1 Business Incubator (DTBi) and the Tanzania Commission of Science and Technology (COSTECH). The programme, which kicked off for an initial six week period, is aimed at equipping a new set of developers with the skills to create applications using Java, and will also open up access to a wide array of tools to enable developers to push the boundaries of what is possible with Java based applications.

The program runs from the 10thApril to 21stMay 2012 and will involve 30 students selected from more than 100 applicants in Tanzania. The selected students will be taken through a fully-funded programme that will include hands-on code laboratories dedicated to cutting-edge web and mobile technologies.

Speaking atthe launch of the programme, Nokia’s Vice-President of Corporate Relations and Business Environment for the region, Jussi Hinkkanen, noted that the partnership with COSTECH and the DTBi is a major boost for Nokia’s efforts in the country: “Nokia’s intention is to equip developers with technical knowledge regarding advanced Java development techniques, which will help them create applications for both Nokia phones, as well as a wide variety of others. This initial training also sets the stage for further collaboration with Nokia and local developers in Tanzania, with the aim of having mobile applications that play a role in the economy of the country and elsewhere.”

COSTECH (www.costech.or.tz)a national body established in 1986, is the principal advisory organ to the government on all matters pertaining to science, technology and innovation and their application for socio-economic development in the country, helping to realize the nation’s development Vision 2025. The DTBi (www.teknohama.or.tz) is an autonomous and private sector driven entity assisting early stage ICT companies in four ways:By lowering and increasing the chances ofsurvival with shared resources, by facilitating access to finance and markets, with credible support through targeted mentoring and coaching, and through networking for technical trends and opportunities.

While officiating the launch, the Deputy Minister for Communication, Science & Technology of Tanzania, Hon. January Makamba stated that the Government of Tanzania was putting in place an enabling environment for ICT growth, “We at the Ministry will do our part to set the proper enabling environment for the growth and enhancement of ICT innovation in the country.  Our goal is to develop critical ICT human resources almost at all levels, and bridging the digital divide gap.”

“Java apps run on top of a number of mobile platforms, including our Series 40 platform, and offer the largest opportunity for any mobile platform representing a huge opportunity for profitability in the mobile industry. I am particularly excited by the kinds of local apps and services that are going to serve people here in Tanzania,” concluded Hinkkanen.

Recently, Nokia has made significant steps in involving the Series 40 user interface, adding touch and full QWERTY keyboards to the portfolio and adding a number of key features across the range like Wi-Fi and location awareness which enable smartphone-like experiences at an affordable price.
